Best Kayaks Beginners – Reviews

Advice, Guides, Tips and Reviews from our Veteran, Adventurer and World-Class Traveler on Anything Related to Best Kayaks Beginners, and Outdoor Adventure Gear.

Why longer kayaks are better than shorter Ones

I have been kayaking since I was a kid but never took it to the next level until I got involved with Hudson valley hikers years and years ago. I remember I joined one of their sunset kayaks 10 miles round trip event on the Hudson with my inflatable 10 ft kayak. Everyone had 12, 14, 16, and 21 ft kayak except 4 of us 10 ft kayaks who were left behind. After we reached the end of the first half, everyone else decided to paddle back after their 40 min break. Then start raining, and here we are the 4 of us made a U-turn and start paddling back without taking a break. Overall, It was an amazing adventure but I will never use or recommend for beginners to invest in an inflatable kayak or smaller kayaks. After that event, I immediately upgraded to a 16 footer kayak that helped me to keep up with my group to explore all the Hudson Valley area has to offer, allowing me to have some of the best kayak adventures of my life. My recommendation for Best Kayaks Beginners is 12 ft kayak or longer. Longer kayaks have more advantages, more stable, move faster, are usually easier to paddle, and capable of carrying heavier loads. They also track better, and glide farther with each stroke than shorter kayaks, to help you reach your destination with less effort so that you can enjoy your adventure. On the other hand, it is ok for folks not interested in speed or kids to use shorter kayaks.

What to Look for in Best Kayaks Beginners

It is very important to learn what to look for before purchasing a kayak. The first question that should come to mind is what would you be using your kayak for? Is it for short, all-day, or multi-day trips? That would help you determine if you need to get a kayak with built-in storage or a lightweight without storage options. Storage will help to keep your gear safely in place and relatively dry, in addition to storing them in dry bags though. The second thing, a person should look for a model with an adjustable seat or foot braces to manage if you have very long or short legs. The third thing, you want to look for are Bungees that are attached to the top of the kayak, as they are elasticated and are a convenient way to store and secure gear to your kayak. The fourth part would be the size and weight of the kayak. Loading the kayak onto your vehicle alone or with help of another person to figure out the weight you can handle. The place where you will be storing your kayak would determine the size of the kayak you need. Wider kayak can be a good beginner’s choice as you grow accustomed to being on the water. It is also a good idea to check the weight limit of any potential kayak purchase to guarantee that it can support you plus the weight of your gear. Now that you understand what to look for in a beginner kayak, you will need to decide if you would like to buy a sit-inside (SI) or sit-on-top (SOT) for Best kayaks fishing.

How to Enhance Your Kayak Shopping Experience

If you were new to kayaking, learning common terms would advance your shopping experience, and brush up on your knowledge so you know what to look for when shopping for beginner kayaks. So let’s get familiar with the 5 following items. 1/Skipper holes at the bottom of sit-on-top kayaks that allow water to pass freely through the kayak. 2/A hatch is enclosed storage that is normally covered with a waterproof lid. 3/ Kayak Stability which means how easily a kayak can flip upside down. The more stable a kayak is the better. 4/ Tracking is to give you an understanding of how a kayak glides without paddling.

What do You do if Your Kayak Flips Over

Best Quality Hiking Boots first advise for beginners is to always paddle close to the shore, and always wear your life vest. In case your kayak is flipped over and you do not know what to do, you can always drag it while swimming to the shore. But if you wish to learn how to manage to get back into your kayak while in water, you can practice the following steps close to the shore until you master it before you can claim that you will be able to manage the situation in real-time when it happens. First, brace to prevent the capsize. Second, you will need to lean forward if you capsize. Thirds, try to slide your hand along your cockpit coaming to the grab loop, and then give it a yank. Fourth, put your hands on cockpit sides and push your knees together, then push yourself forward and allow your PFD to do the rest.

  1. I have been kayaking before, but it feels so long ago it may have been in a passed life. I have been interested in giving it another go, especially with fishing. I live near the Ebro river in northern Spain and not far from the Mediterranean sea. Having something I can be comfy on and fish is a must. I like the BKC PK13 Angler 13′ Solo Sit-On-Top Fishing Kayak.

I will look into this further, thanks for the article.
